"Welcome to the World, Baby Girl"

Pop Rock

This bouncy tribute to infancy came about when Maria from Chicago ordered a Song Bokay in honor of her friends' newborn daughter, Brianna Lynn. Maria let Paul write the lyrics; she just gave him the title, some info, and a few ideas and suggestions — such as the baby's birthdate, the fact that both the parents are pizza fanatics, and a suggested rhyme ("wouldn't be late/couldn't wait" — since the baby was a wee bit early). The result was so catchy that Maria says it gets stuck in her head for days at a time, and the parents were extremely moved, to say the least.

"Hidden Lion"

Acoustic Folk

Chris, a writer in New Zealand, had Paul set this striking original poem to music. Since the lyrics were already complete, Paul concentrated on setting them to a lovely and haunting melody in the Acoustic Folk style Chris selected. The ocean and travel images in the song seem particularly appropriate for a collaboration between two writers half a world apart, with lots of ocean in between!

"Brian Turns 40"

Rockabilly

Brian's wife commissioned Paul to write this Rockabilly homage as a kind of musical centerpiece for Brian's surprise birthday party. She got the whole family to contribute ideas for the song, so it's loaded with fun personal details (like the fact that Brian is a gourmet cook — hence the reference to making him cook for his own party!) Hey, if you have to turn forty, at least you should get a song like this to ease the pain.

"Girl with the Cigarette"

Shuffle Blues

Another set of finished lyrics, this time written by Theo, a writer in the UK who had Paul set his film noir-esque imagery to a Shuffle Blues backing. The result is a smoky outing for guitar and harmonica that sounds like a nod to Chicago's gangster past, as imagined by an Englishman with a taste for rainy nights and a serious nicotine jones.

"Freeing the Dark"

Pop Rock

A second lyric submitted by Chris from New Zealand, "Freeing the Dark" is an exuberantly eccentric ode to "Poets and tombstones and termites." The surreal imagery combines with the happy Pop Rock style Chris selected to create something truly offbeat: chipper, tongue-in-cheek and subversively strange all at the same time.
